Secure timed pill dispenser?

Mum has just started on Donepazil / Aricept a week ago. She did the first week quite well but is now getting confused about the days (and denying it, which means she isn't trying to help us help her).

There are no family nearby who can supervise her daily, so we will either have to get someone from an agency to go in each day (which she really doesn't want) or try a timed automatic pill dispenser, which she might be able to deal with as long as she can't open it on the wrong day ... this is the problem.

Does anyone know of such a device? Or has any experience using one?

My mum was given a Pivotell medication dispenser via her GP. It was filled by the Pharmacist, and delivered to her, with a second one which was re-filled and returned in time to do a swap.

She had multiple daily medications at a variety of times, and this machine coped with that well. An alarm goes off to alert you, and the case top swivels to reveal the pills in a small slot. You then have to pick up the case and turn it over to tip out the pills. It can be locked if required.

For her it was very successful, but she did start using fairly early after diagnosis, and was able to adapt to it and use it independently. That might not be the case for all people of course, and there will probably come a time when using it independently becomes impossible for most.

Here's a link to the website for more information:

We've used one we got via Amazon - Tabtime Medelert - Lockable and seems to work well, although i observed mum pick it up when it bleeped and energetically throw her medication behind her chair!

Contact your local council - it comes under assistive technology and I've seen one displayed the other day at the carers centre.
