My Dads AD has recently progressed to the state that he needs a nursing home rather than a care home as he is occationally aggressive and occationally exhibits sexual disinahibition.(sorry about the spelling) He is only 76, the majority of the time a real gent who if you didn't know he was talking rubbish could pass as not having AD. He is physically very fit and active he needs a home where the majority of the residents have language skills and are not end stage. mostly male residents and a secure garden would be a must . Does anyone know of such a place - he is self funding - midlands down would be good for us -

Hi Diddy, and welcome to TP.
There is a policy on the board not to recommend homes, although people are free to Pivate Message you if they know anywhere that might be suitable.
I think to be honest you'll find it very hard to find any home where the majority are male: demographics suggest that there are far more women than men in nursing homes.
Have you looked at www.csci.gov.uk? That allows for you to search for homes that might fit your needs and read the inspection reports on them as well.

I don't wish anyone to breach policy, as a family we have visited so many nursing homes looking for one that dad will be comfortable in - at this point any suggestions would be great - we would then obviously visit them ourselves. I have spent many an hour trawling through the report web site - it is not brilliant when my dad realy needs a younger group of residents. I understand the predominance of female Ad sufferers it's just that dad is a little over the top with his affection - brightens there day but frightens the staff - perhaps better intervention and more activities would divert him - D
Dear Diddy: I hope I wasn't too off putting. I was just trying to warn you that nursing home recommendations don't get posted on the board, although as I said, someone may PM you with a suggestion or two.
Part of the problem for you is that even a home that has a lot of males will have an almost exclusively female care staff.
Is your father on any medication, either for the AD of for anything else? Have you asked his GP if there's anything that could be prescribed to reduce his libido?

You didn't put me off - resiliant lot us AD carers - Dad is currently on a mental health ward and they are messing with his medication - he is settling down well - slowly but well - he now only exhibits agression or sexual behaviour maximum of once a week for a few moments - but it is enough to make it unlikely that the care home he was at before his in patient stint will have him back - which is a real shame as he loved it there - D

He's not on any or the Parkinson's meds? Because they have the known side effect of increasing libido. I still wonder whether if it might not be possible to have meds prescribed that would deal with this behaviour, although I recognise that many of our loved ones are on so much medication that adding another one may not be either a good idea or practical.. Are you certain that the original home wouldn't take him back - let's face it challenging behaviour is part and parcel of dementia. Having said that, though, perhaps a home which can't handle such par for the course behaviours might not be the best place for him, no matter how much he loved it.
Have you contacted your local Alzheimer's society branch? They may be able to direct you to potential homes. Also, many branches have meetings where carers can get together: that might provide a source of information.

It may be worth talking to the Elderly Accommodation Council who can give you a list of homes suited to your needs and in your area. Check this post for details:
