Hi

I applied and got council tax reduction for my husband who has just been diagnosed with dementia. Now I have received a letter saying that because my grandson lives with us the amount of adults in our house means he cannot get a reduction

Is this correct ?

Yes, the SME is a disregard, it reduces the occupancy by one.
One occupant - no council tax
Two occupants - 25% discount
More than two occupants - no reduction.

Hi and welcome to Talking Point.

That sounds correct (assuming your grandson is an adult, and isn't a full time student).

The way it works is that the discount essentially removes a person from the home. So 1 person living alone pays no tax, 2 people pay 75% of the tax but 3 or more people mean no reduction.

I wish it were 50% for two! Alas, it's 75%.
Edit: you corrected it before I pressed send!
