Return from respite

Mum has been home two days from being in respite.

I anticipated her being a little confused, but she appears to have lost some of her language, instead making noises.

Worryingly, when I returned from the school run this afternoon, mum was talking with a stranger at the bottom of the drive.
The lady said mum was wandering up and down the road, and asked her when I was coming home.
I thanked her for keeping with mum, we walked back up the drive, and the front door was open.
Should I lock her in when I leave the house in future? Other suggestions if you have any?

Please don`t lock your mum in @Pickle2510. There is no saying what might happen.

It now seems your mother is not safe when left alone and perhaps difficult decisions may need to be made.

I there any chance you can share the school run with another parent or get some agency support for her.

Please contact Social Services and explain your mum is a vulnerable adult and at risk when left alone. You have a young child/children who need escorting to and from school.

There might not be a well meaning person there the next time.

Dear @Pickle2510 ,

I put dad into respite care for two weeks and within a fortnight I put him back into the home permanently because we lost another care company and he had a fall. I think now is the time to consider 24 hour care I know it's difficult but it would be for the best.

Thinking of you

hi @Pickle2510
sadly, I think the respite has brought into focus that it's time for a move into full time residential care to keep your mum safe

Maybe register with a home care agency for a carer to be with your mum when you go out on the school run.
