Can anyone tell me how this works, the mil has a allowence of 6000 per year for respite, she has to pay 102 a week towards it so i assume that in any home thats only a quarter of it. Anway what happens if you use that 6000 in one year, say you have to put someone in for long periods, can you even do that?

You seem to be saying that with LA assistance MIL has to pay £102/Wk and if the cost to the LA is £x/Wk then they will pay £9x-102)/Wk to a maximum of £6000/Yr

You should check with the LA whether this is a correct interpretation and if there are any restrictions on choice of care home or rate of spending the £6000/Yr

As a self funder you can buy as much respite care as you want?
