From the pages of "NEXUS" magazine comes an interesting piece on recent research into the Berberine plant as being a multipotent
therapy for reducing risk of Alzheimer's:

What do others on here think about this ?

There's been quite a few 'breakthroughs' reported in the media but the problem is that although they can produce promising results in mice and rats none have gone on to produce the same results when replicated in humans. Research into the effects of berberine on Alzheimer's has been going on for some years and there seems to have been no clinical trials yet, but good that research into reducing the risk of Alzheimer's continues.

I don't understand how anyone can say something reduces the risk of dementia when we don't know what an individual's risk of getting dementia was in the first place.

The research is in the context of trying to reduce a known risk factor associated with Alzheimer's (proteins/enzymes in the brain in this case) rather than reducing an individual's risk of getting Alzheimer's.

Media references to clinical 'breakthroughs' in dementia make good headlines but tend to be a bit misleading once you look beyond the headline and read the small print. Maybe worth a try if you have a rodent displaying symptoms of dementia though ?

From what I have read, once the plaque has attached to the neurons it's too late. The neurons die and it's irreversible. So theprotection of the neurons is important as one element of prevention. It's interesting that they say there was some improvement in part of the memory
