We sometimes have posts from people who believe they might have the early stages of dementia and, of course, this is totally worrying for them.

Generally, we suggest that there may be other causes and in any case, to see their GP to arrange a consultation and perhaps tests.

Today, in a family situation, I came across what might be a red herring - the use of statins. http://medicine.ucsd.edu/ses/adverse_effects.htm

In the web pages above, check out "Lesser known side effects" and "memory".

apparently many people who take statins get concerned that the memory loss they may suffer might be dementia. When they stop the medication, the memory loss may no longer be there.

Just my thoughts....

Some causes of forgetfulness

While on the subject of red herrings, I came across the following site and references [there are more if you want to look]

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/forgetfulness/causes.htm

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/forgetfulness/common.htm

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/forgetfulness/side-effects.htm

http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/symptoms/forgetfulness/drug-interactions.htm

I have no relationship whatever with this site, just Googled 'forgetfulness' and found it.

I hope it may help someone!
