Prescription abroad?

My father has dementia. He is UK based but has been abroad for the last few months. Unfortunately, the country he is in does not have one of the medicines he takes. His UK GP gave him an initial supply to cover the period but she has said that she can't prescribe any more without being able to monitor him.

Has anyone else had experience of this situation?

Use EHIC medical card to see local Dr for emergency prescription maybe, presuming the medicine will be available under a different name?
