Hi there

Well mum's been in her new home since the beginning of December and she's settling down a bit more now. Although if we go out she still says "ooh, who lives in this fancy house then?" as we walk up the path, like she's never seen it before, does that pass?

I suppose I wanted to post to reassure people who are going down that route that it can get easier. Mum now recognises people there, has made a friend and tells me that the carers are lovely. I'm not saying it's not going to get harder, or have bad days but we're getting there. A couple of months ago I never thought mum would settle and it broke my heart having to leave her there.

I've had much the same experience with my dad.

I never thought I could possibly 'put him in a home', but ultimately the matter was largely taken out of my hands, and it's proved to be a positive thing. He is settled, as content as he would be anywhere, and physically healthy again (after having gone some months not eating or drinking properly). And I can relax knowing that he's safe, secure, and well looked after - which, in turn, allows me to have real 'quality' time with him when I visit. I'm convinced it's better for us both this way.

Totally agree, I don't spend every hour worrying now and I know the carers look after mum really well. Possibly better than I could. And now the time I do spend with her we both enjoy. :)

A good care home is a marvellous thing. I am so lucky with the care home my parents are in. Dad is deteriorating quicker than mum and has had a few hospital admissions. I must say the home (nursing home) has been fantastic. The carers and nurses clearly know both my parents' foibles well, and they have been absolutely on the ball with medical care & when to get docs & hospital involved. They are doing an amazing job of keeping mum socialising while dad is confined to bed in their room. Mum says she feels that the carers have become like family - and the carers all seem geniunely fond of them. Both are self funding - and its worth every penny.
There have been rocky moments - and it took a while for things to settle, but they are so much better off and happier in that supported environment than struggling on at home. I am a massive bore to all my friends and aquaintances on the subject of how positive a move into care can be.
