Hi all,

Just wondering if any of you have come across this?!

So just over two weeks ago, dad who has mixed dementia, Alz & Vascular, started to slow down so much so that he wasn't able to sit up without help, we thought at the time that it was just general age pains he was having and were giving him paracetamol.

He came to, and was mobile, and walked into respite on wed 9/8. On the Friday, they rang me to ask had he been slow to move for us, as he was being slow for them, but once up and about seemed ok, explained that he had been and we had just given him paracetamol, they had checked him over, no temperature and no signs of UTI. By the Sunday he was completely immobile, so they called an ambulance and he was taken to the nearest A & E, where they diagnosed Pneumonia. Since then Sunday 13th August, he has only tried to walk twice, he will not sit up or move himself.

The physio, who has seen him only three times, said there is no more they can do, as he will not obey their commands. I did say to her, that he can't obey commands, he has Alzheimer's, he needs to be coaxed and spoken to directly so he can understand what is being asked of him.

He wasn't out of the bed at all yesterday is still being treated for the infection, which is making him sleep. The longer he is left lying in bed, the harder it is going to be for him to remember to move.

They rang us this morning, to ask to meet with us next week, to talk about future options as we have a stairs at home, and he wont move, & what we can do next.

I'm wondering if any of you have had similar experience, or the same, where the infection was so bad that they stopped being mobile completely.

Thanks in Advance

Ciara

Any infection can cause a down-turn of the dementia symptoms. Sometimes things improve again as the infection clears.

In our situation, Mum was taken into hospital due to a series of falls. She was up on her feet and walking pretty much 24/7 at that stage, not even going to bed at night

Whilst in hospital she was diagnosed with pneumonia. That same day she was helped out of bed, as usual, for breakfast. When they came to help her back into bed after lunch, Mum was unable to stand and has been dependent on full hoisting ever since. As such, she is now in a Care Home and has not been out of bed for months :(
