Hi everyone.

My husband will very shortly be going permanently into a care home. I know that the mobility part of his PIP payment will continue (he is on the higher rate) We currently are entitled to free road tax for our car. I was wondering if anyone knows whether the entitlement to this will cease once he has moved into the care home. Very many thanks in advance.

My take on the situation is that as long as the standard conditions

The vehicle must be registered in the disabled person’s name or their nominated driver’s name.

It must only be used for the disabled person’s personal needs. It cannot be used by the nominated driver for their own personal use.

are met the exemption would still apply.

Taking him out for a run in the car, maybe to a garden centre or similar, is obviously covered as long as you are not driving mega miles to get to the home.

Using the car just to visit him will probably not be covered.
