Unbelieveable Comment!!!!
If any one didnt see it, Stephen Ladyman MP was on the show being interviewed said people with dimentia/alzheimers "get better". To say my blood was boiling would be putting it mildly.

Yes I did see the programme - and YES I could have punched his lights out too. What a dickhead!! So this is our illustrious Health Minister is it.? God help all AD sufferes in that case.
I was in tears during the programme and also in a frenzy of rage and frustration for the carers, who were almost at the end of their collective tethers trying to stay awake 24 hours to look after their family members. For Barbara who after 3 years, is told that more assesments are required. For Peter struggling to cope at nights after a stroke when the nursing staff didn't arrive and couldn't go into hospital because his wife would be left alone. And for Frieda, who had almost lost all hope of receiving any help whatsoever and who at 70+ was literally killing herself to keep her husband at home.
And this ARROGANT, POMPOUS Stephen Ladyman, who clearly didn't have a CLUE about any issues pertinent to Altzheimers Disease and who had the complete temerity to scoff at the situation and say that AD sufferers 'get better'. I was pleased that the Panorama team showed him up to be a completely callous, self-serving individual. Good on them..!
What did come over very strongly was that the guidelines for assessment were comletely incomprehensible to most people. I received a copy of these last week. I am far from stupid and it took me 3 days to even begin to understand what it meant. It was also totally obvious that the SHA staff have little understanding of what is needed either. Presumably, by the time everyone has waded through all this stupid bureau-speak, then the patient will have died and the problem will no longer exist, which would be terribly convenient.......
The assessment situation is hardly going to improve with Stephen Ladyman as Health Minister. I suggest we all lobby to have him removed as soon as possible.

I also was enraged at the flippant remarks made my the MP, to say he "knows of" people that have recovered from dementia beggars belief.
He came across as arrogant and clueless to anything connected with dementia, i think if you are willing to be interviewed about any specialist subject then you had better make sure you have done your homework because there are thousands of people like ourselves who live it everyday and therefore know hands on what it involves and dont have to try and learn about it for 10 mins "before being filmed".

I have not yet seen the programme though I recorded it and will watch it tonight.

so will view the programme in the expectation that they wanted to stimulate discussion on the topic, therefore had in place the biggest idiot they could find, with the aim in mind of stimulating people, and realising that people like us would react, so they would know how to change the system to be more responsive to needs.

I sincerely hope that those flying pigs are en route to Stephen Ladyman's home, where they will download a fairly salutory message about his performance last night.
Watch the vid and make sure you have something handy to punch.
I have no expectation that my parents will be granted any form of assistance from the SHA now. They don't come within cooee of the assessment guidelines - which seem to be that unless you are registering 3 heartbeats per minute, then you won't qualfiy.
As do many others, we need help to pay for carers, not registered nurses at this stage. What happens when the oldies' personal funds run out???? My parents are 86 and I just hope I can eke out their funds to the end.
After watching the Panorama programme last night, where most contracted AD in their late 50's/early 60's, then I feel that the SHA's have a duty to provide full funding in these cases as a priority. But, recognising that all AD sufferers are going to reach this point, then forward planning for future care fees seems to be extremely important and to establish a waiting list for same is going to be paramount.
Of course, none of this will happen at all with the current 'Health Minister' in place. So far as I can see, then this smug ******* should spend one month in each of the homes of Barbara, Peter and Frieda as a 24/7 carer, until he gets the message.

I too wept for the carers and was enraged by Stephen Ladyman's dismissive attitude - would he care to substantiate his statement that Alzhiemer's patients "get better" by providing sworn statements from a few medical specialists in dementia?
The Iraq "dodgy dossier" has nothing on this for gross inaccuracy - at least at the time there was possibly some room for doubt on the intelligence from Iraq - but Ladyman's statements beggar belief - they need to sack his researchers and then sack him.
The lies he told were appalling, and not even ameliorated by a convincing show (however hollow) of any sympathy to the individuals portrayed or to dementia sufferers and carers generally.
The people portrayed are all heroes, and Barbara Pointon deserves a medal (or even better to be elevated to the peerage) for her tenacity over the last few years in fighting for her husband's rights - she doesn't deserve another kick in the teeth at this stage.
I'm sure we'll get a few more comments on this - then can the comments be sent to Ladyman and Blair, and can quotes be used in a press release - I will happily give my consent to my words being used in whatever way the Alzheimers Society thinks fit.

Haven't as yet watched programme - yesterday was Mum's birthday and I thought it would be just a tad too near the bone given the nightmare experience over the past 12 months of the so-called care system and the sadness I was already feeling. Thought I'd read members' comments prior to rewinding video tape which I have just done.
Having read everybody's comments, not sure I should watch given my ever-diminishing supply of crockery and that we have not yet eaten! However, here goes - paper plates all round will save on the washing up.
I am very new to this site as a registered user, although have followed people's experiences/advice over some 12 months and have found it very supportive, sad, frustrating, thought-provoking and full of sound advice. So, thanks for being there.

I am desperately disappointed by the comments which Stephen Ladyman made. To give the impression that dementia is any less savage than it is can be nothing short of criminal.
I agree with the comments of the lady in the Alzheimer's Society press release on the website. If he had nursed someone with dementia he might have chosen his words more carefully.
If people are looking for things to do they could email their MP from the Alzheimer's Society website. There is a tool in the News and Campaigns section where you can email your MP about the free healthcare campaign. It also allows you to put your own comments, so it is possible to write your own about Stephen Ladyman's comments. I have already done so!

I watched this programme last night and could not belive the mp's comments, I have worked for the past 14 years with people with Ad and dememtia they dont get better. Ihave sent e-mails tothe bbc also the health minister himself today, he should go out and try what them and many other loved ones do 24/7 and see if they change their policys then

I was deeply saddened by what I saw on the Panorama programme.I watched it with my partner and cried because I know mum will one day be like that.I have only just joined this and I feel I can talk about mum and you all understand.I have a private meassage but I am having problems obtaining it.She was once a Nurse and seeing her end her life like this just does not make sense.I am too a nurse and with all my experience I still find it so hard to accept mum with Alziemers.I feel so guilty because I dont want to see her because it grieves me so much to see her like this.But I continue to see her because I love her and she is still my mum.I miss her so much.

I can only feel admiration for those carers that choose to nurse their loved ones at home. This illness is so cruel and to load all the incomprehensible beaurocracy on top of all the stress they are already going through is just unbelievable. I found myself talking back to the television as I Just couldn't believe what I was hearing. I just hope when the time comes, I'll have half the courage that those carers have . At the moment I feel that if I came face to face with the minister, I'd be had up for GBH!

Shouted at the TV so loudly last night that I feared my husband would wake and think I had been taken ill. I still have not calmed down, I trust the ALZ soc will get in touch with this man and ask him to explain himself via a statement to this website. My 10 year old could tell you more about Dementia, I have never heard such arroagnace and ignorance even from an MP and that is saying something. Can I suggest that we all e mail our own MP's via the link from the site and demand some sort of explanation regarding these heartless and dangerous commenta.

Just watched it !!!!I can only agree with all the comments made.
I was pig sick,when you look at a man like that minister it becomes obvious that all they are concerned with is finance.
I do hope this causes such a stink that some good comes out of the broadcast

well I dont think it will norman because none of the news channels have brodcast anything about it today.
I mean last week we had a documentary about the bnp being racist OMG tell me somethign we dont know and last nights Panorama probably wouldnt have been watched by many people due to the content, cause quite frankly who really wants to watch something like that unless they have a loved on in that situation?
So im afraid I think Mr Ladyman will get away with his comments.
