John and I were lying in bed at 7 am when this came on the news and he said " Well he'll be interested to know he has the same illness as me".

I was more than a little surprised.

I have never seen Dr Zhivago, but remember him from when Funny Girl with Barbra Streisand was on the telly - my mam loved that film. Such a very handsome man.

It's always sad to hear of someone else with dementia, famous or not. Quite a few years ago I found out that my fearsome junior school headmaster had died with Alzheimers, and remember feeling sad about that. Little did I know that this dreadful illness would strike in my own family.

a few nuggets mo43 likes a lot

Tomorrow is promised to nobody

Clint Eastwood in absolute Power

and the last verse from the Eagles
CD long road out of Eden

Its your world now

But first a kiss, one glass of wine
Just one more dance while there's still time
My one last wish: someday, you'll see
How hard I tried and how much you meant to me

It's your world now
Use well the time
Be part of something good
Leave something good behind
The curtain falls
I take my bow
That's how it's meant to be
It's your world now

My husband is almost 85. I suppose some would say he's had a 'good innings'.

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.'

Yes, saw that - very sad... :(

Our future children (that we are never going to have - but just on the off chance) are called Lara and Sasha after that film...

How sad to hear about Omar Sharif. I am just going to read Izzy's link.

Thanks Izzy! I'll try - it was made the year I was born!
Oh you must try to see it! It is often on TV, just about every year I think, and I never miss it. Nor does my daughter!

It is timeless. It is a classic. It is historical. The Russian Revolution.

Beautiful photography, beautiful unforgettable music. Beautiful love story. Sad and tragic history.

Julie Christie is beautiful in the film - and Omar Sharif! Life has aged them. But not the film they made together. The film could have been made yesterday - except there are no explicit sex scenes. Just a passionate love story beautifully told.

There is now a modern version of the film. But the original Dr Zhivago is unforgettable. A must.
