Dear Talking Point,

I was wondering if someone would be able to advise on how to find a nursing home with slightly younger residents (aged 55-75)?

My father was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's aged 64, but has always been in good physical shape.

He is still physically active although his condition is now severe and behaviour challenging as a result.

I am looking for a specialist dementia nursing home that has younger residents or more men than average, because he seems to be comforted by seeing men in his situation. He has issues with the day centre where it was predominately women in their 80s but not with the male hospital ward with men in their early 70s.

I was even wondering if there is a resource available or if you could private message me suitable places?

We live in west Cambridgeshire (Huntingdon area), close to Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire but would be willing to travel to find him a place that is suitable.

Alternatively, I was wondering if there is someone else in a similar situation to me, with a youngish parent and looking for a nursing home?

Thank you for all your help,

Bea

I think most nursing homes are for all ages you wouldn't want to move someone who is settled just because they are too old,

I hope you find somewhere suitable,

My husband has been going to a Day Centre and respite at a Care Home for 5 years and he is 66 now, he was the youngest when he started,

Best wishes, Jeany

I was 62 at the time my step mother went in to care and the oldest resident was 99.

Alarmingly I was 5 years older than 1 of the residents.

My Husband was 66 when he went into care, he is 68 now. Out of 15 residents there are two younger than Pete at 65. Pete was quite physically active when he first went into care-although starting to shuffle. I suggest that you get on the phone and starting with the CH closest to you call them and ask about ages etc. That way you will save some leg work. Don't forget to mention that your Dad has challenging behaviour-my OH was black listed by a whole chain of CH's where I live as he'd been in one for respite and they couldn't cope. Will your Dad be self funding? Is there a SW involved?

Take care

Thank you everyone, it's good to know that there are a few people in a similar situation. I have phoned a few places and explained the severity of Dad's condition and the challenging behaviour. Two in the local area seem to be able to cope with it, but one is full up with six on the waiting list and I'm waiting to hear back from the other. I would also feel bad if he was put with frail old ladies because he is a danger to them. It would be good if there were some places that could accept only younger residents and were able to offer specific care for them. Please let me know if you have more suggestions.

More staff for dementia homes

My sister is now 68 and we had to place her in a home August 2013 after many weeks she settled down as was treated quite well, the home she was in was not just dementia patients unfortunately it decided to close and gave us two weeks notice to find her a new home.We found a new one after looking at as many as we could in the two weeks but she is now in what looks like a very nice home but she on a floor that is just for dementia and we feel this is so wrong ,the staff are lovely but there is just not enough of them to cope with the violence the shouting its awful. We were called the other day to say she had fallen out of bed and has a massive black eye and bruising on her arms.Looks so thin and distressed we are at our wits end as my sister cant express herself we dont know what to do.There are three staff on at one time for 14 residents it is no way enough.
