I am not sure that I am writing this in the correct thread, but here goes anyway. I will try and keep things brief but my wife has been in a nursing home for 5 years (she has Alzheimers) At first we were self funding, She then started having regular seizures so we then after an assessment received NHS CHC, When a review came up about 4 months ago, the seizures were under control through medication. My wife although bedridden and doesnt speak she is compliant and has good behaviour. The CHC was withdrawn. I appealed and lost essentially because she did not cause a problem.

She has now started getting chest infections affecting her breathing and coughing. I am now about to ask for a further assessment. I know this area is a minefield as everything seems to be stacked against the patient. There appears to be no acceptance that alzheimers is an illness and only seems to warrant payment if the person is a problem or aggressive. Does anyone lese have any views about what constitutes "if needs significantly change"

, the seizures were under control through medication.

If you want to contest research 'well managed need' e.g.https://caretobedifferent.co.uk/do-you-really-understand-well-managed-needs-argument-2018/

There appears to be no acceptance that alzheimers is an illness

Illness does not matter in CHC assessment, medical need is the criterion.

Think of CHC as continuing hospital care.
Currently does your wife require care in excess of that provided by the community service but less than that provided in a hospital, which has large overheads?
This is the economic basis of CHC.

Hi @nipper ....if you look at Nitram's post #5 on this thread, there is a link for the Decision Support Tool .....it's a PDf and long but if you scroll down about a quarter it has the criteria for each domain. I checked it for my pwd and there is no way he'd be eligible at the moment, he would have to need specialised nursing rather than procedures that can be carried out by carers. But, of course, do also talk to her CH manager and GP and get their opinions too. Good luck, I hope it works out for you
