my husband was prescribed Nemdatine for a 3 month trial period due to him hallucinating. he had successfully been taking Aricept for 6 years prior to this. After 2 months on |Nemdatine his condition worsened, such as not knowing who I was. So we went back to his specialist who suggested a return to taking Aricept. I am hoping things will revert to how it was pre. Nemdatine. I wonder if anyone out there has had a similar experience?????

No similar experience, in fact the opposite, it was successful.

For info Nemdatine is a brand name for Memantine.

Same as Nitram. After 4 years on aricept my husband suffered from hallucinations and severe anxiety, in fact absolute panic. He was taken off aricept and the hallucinations went and when he was put on Memantine the anxiety decreased. He still takes memantine. I am certain that originally he derived benefit from the aricept.

Hi Muscat,

Dad was given memantine. His condition also deteriorated he did not know who we were. He became virtually bedridden. He also started fitting, he was hospitalised very seriously ill, though they never gave a really answer as to what had caused his illness. The matron and the rest of the family asked for him to be taken off memantine. The mental health team agreed. His health improved immediately he still has hallucinations but he knows who we are. He can still be aggressive but eats well and we all agree his quality of life is much improved without memantine.

Hi
Same as some of the others really. OH on donepezil for years, got hallucinations, and Memantine added, after antipsychotics, which aren't long term things, which seemed to do the trick. His hallucinations went. He stayed on them until 3 months before he died, when he was so bad, all anti dementia drugs were stopped.
I assume Memantine was introduced with ever increasing doses over a month? If it wasn't, this could make a difference to his tolerance of them.

Hi all, Dad was prescribed Memantine and his dosage was gradually increased over time, as per medical guide lines. However it still had a detrimental effect on his well being. Wish you well and hope you are able something that will settle your husband. X

Hi all, when Dad was prescribed Memantine it was given per medical guidelines slowly building up his dosage. However he still suffered an adverse reaction. Hope you are able to find medication that suits your husband. X

It was useful to hear your comments on Nemdatine and realise we weren't alone. We went back to my husbands specialist after 2 months of taking it and a definite adverse reaction. She put him back on to Aricept and his condition has definitely improved . Thank you 99Purdy
