My Story and new Petition on the No.10 Downing Street website.

Hi,

I am new to this message board and after having a discussion with Andrew Ketteringham (Director of External Affairs), the Alzheimer's Society have kindly put a link on this Site to a Petition I started on the No.10 Website.

http://www.alzheimers.org.uk/News_and_campaigns/Campaigning/accesstocontinuingcare.htm

I thought I would reinforce the above link and tell you my story.

I look after my 78 year old mother who has chronic arthritis, emphysema, epilepsy, history of 3 strokes, 1 heart attack and is now becoming slightly dementured.

On top of that, I have a Brother (aged 53) who is self funding in a Private Nursing Home. Rod had a massive Brain Haemorrhage on 24th May, 2005. As a result of this, he has been left paralysed, doubly incontinent, peg tube in his stomach for fluids, constant pain due to Thalamic Pain Syndrome, suicidal, epileptic, constant skin irritation and is on over 15 medications a day. He has also had many infections including MRSA (list not exhaustive). He has been refused Fully Funded NHS Continuing Care because Central and Eastern Cheshire Primary Care Trust seem to think that his main need is a social need and not a nursing need. What absolute rubbish.

I am now fighting the NHS to get the funding he should be getting under the law of the land. Unfortunately the battle is frought with endless and deliberate delay, procrastination, prevarication and sheer bloody-minded intransigence on behalf of the NHS.

The Website can be seen at: www.continuingcarecampaign.info

The Petition can be seen at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Continuing-Care/

I would be more than grateful if you would have a look at the website and sign up to the petition.

The Core Principles of the NHS can be summed up as follows: To provide care which is free at the point of need, meets the needs of everyone and is based on a patient's clinical need not their ability to pay.

Tony Blair said at the Labour Party Conference in 1997 that he didn't want his children brought up in a country where pensioners had to sell their homes to pay for long term care.

Since then approx 700,000 homes have been sold to pay for care.

This applies to sick people of all ages. These people have paid taxes and national insurance all their lives, then suddenly they get taxed again when they become ill by funding their own long term care. What an absolute disgrace!!!!!

If you have an illness or disability you are entitled to Fully Funded NHS Continuing Care under the National Health Service Act 1946/48 and the 'Coughlan' Judgement in the Court of Appeal 1999.

Kind Regards,

Stephen (Johnson).

I have signed and passed to friends and relatives. Not wishing to take political sides, people have to realise that politicians always talk a good story. They are liars to their teeth. Politicians are nothing special and should not be put on a peddle stool. A good political story is released many many times. ie I will give 6 million pounds to the nhs in april 2010. (january speech) i will give 6 million pounds to the nhs in april 2010. (august speech) i will give 6 million pounds to the nhs in april 2010. (december speech) Every time people think "oh good another 6 million". Come april 2010 it quitely passes and 2 million might be given.
Why in the budget yesterday was tax reduced applying in 2008. They are like utility companies reducing price of gas/electric in march or april AFTER the cold weather should have finished. Politicians promise everything, and deliver nothing because the publics memory fails and forgets the promises.
Who started me off. :D sorry

‘HUNDREDS BACK FIGHT TO HELP SICK AND ELDERLY’

Hundreds of people have already signed a petition calling on the Prime Ministerto fund long-term care for the sick and elderly.
Acton Bridge resident Stephen Johnson, of strawberry Lane, started the campaignon the Government’s number 10 website and within its first six days more than 200 people signed up.
More than 700 had backed the campaign at the time of going to press.
Rod, whose story has been followed by the Guardian, is now being cared for at Redwalls Nursing Home in Northwich but is funding his own care because authorities refuse to pay.
Under the current system the NHS will pay for long-term care if it is deemed medically necessary but if it is considered social care the costs are means tested.
You can also keep up with the latest developments on the Guardian’s website and add your own comments.

Dear Norman,

The Core Principles of the NHS can be summed up as follows: To provide care which is free at the point of need, meets the needs of everyone and is based on a patient's clinical need not their ability to pay.

Indeed they are the words of Aneurin Bevan and are the core principles of the NHS. The law hasn't changed since the National Health Service Act was passed in 1948. Unfortunately the government seem to ignore the law.

Many thanks you and everyone else who has signed the petition.

Kind Regards,

Stephen (johnson).
