Anyone know if there is any way my mum could claim this? She is now wheelchair-bound, which means me struggling to get the heavy chair in the boot of my car, and getting mum into the car seat is also not easy. She has an electric chair which is brilliant, but it won't fit in the boot, and weighs even more. I was looking at motability vans which look perfect, I could drive mum up the ramp in the chair. But mum only gets attendance allowance, can't now get DLA as it is closed to new applicants and also can't apply for PIP as she is over 65, and these are the qualifying benefits needed in order to apply for motability. Anyone know a way round this?

@fortune sorry as far as I can see if she is over 65 she is not entitled to join the motability scheme.

I know in some areas a blue badge gives access to community transport such as wheelchair friendly buses which can be prebooked, I think there may still be a charge, but it is low. I think there is one in my area but haven't yet investigated this as mum is still mobile. This may be an option you could explore.

I am on PIP, get full mobility which entitles me to join the motability scheme if I choose. I’m over 65.

Attendance allowance is separate to Pip. We have friends who’s husband had a massive stroke and we’re able apply and get full mobility and living allowance portions of PIP. They were also able to claim carers allowance. There are other benefits you can claim. The government don’t make it easy but if you go to the government website or contact Age concern they can give you advice.

Appears that everything has changed recently. Having just read the new guidelines if it’s a new claim and you haven’t previously received pip you can no longer claim over 65. That seems ridiculous as that’s when most people need the help.

65 unfortunately is the cut off point for the old DLA and its replacement PIP, the entitlement then is AA it has been so for at least the last 30years

DLA is closed to new applicants and PIP now only goes to people under 65 so if you don't get them before you're 65 then you're not able to join the scheme, however, if you get these benefits before you're 65 then currently the position is that you can stay on them and so can get a car on motability seems to be the position.
As your mum is over 65 then she can apply for Attendance Allowance which at the higher rate is about £85pw so worth getting if she's not on it already.
It is possible to get a Wheelchair Accessable Vehicle (WAV) quite cheaply if you stay away from the specialist dealers who can be very expensive and look for one being sold privately ar one a dealer has taken as a part exchange and doesn't want, I found some for sale cheaper than an unadapted version as it's a niche market so shop around.
