Mental Capacity Assessments

Has anyone used a private company which provides suitably qualified staff to do mental capacity assessments? I'd be interested to know how much information they required prior to the assessment.

Have been in touch with a few and the info required seems to vary. In my case it could be a challenge to provide some of the info.

I`m not really sure what you are asking for @Spiro as it seems you are a long term carer having joined TP seven years ago.

Do you think a private consultation with a medical specialist might provide what you are looking for?

Mental capacity can fluctuate so an assessment can only confirm whether the person is deemed to lack capacity at the time of the assessment. Plus people may have mental capacity in relation to some decisions but not others. Not sure why there would be a need to provide specific information prior to the assessment but as you state that the information requested by private companies varies then you have to be guided by what each company is asking for. Have you spoken to the GP about this? If they are unwilling to make a determination on capacity they could refer to an Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA). A bit more background with regards to why you are intending to go to a private company rather than the usual channels would be helpful.

Thanks for the replies. Suffice to say, using a company that specialises in these assessments is sometimes necessary.

Welcome to the forum Nigel. Members aren't able to provide recommendations of that type but if you carry out an internet search for - Independent Mental Capacity Advocate - plus include the area that you are living, there will hopefully be someone local to you who will be able to assist.

For his LPAs The Banjoman’s Solicitor talked with him and decided he had the understanding and capacity to make them.

I didn’t agree with social services mental capacity assessment so contacted the Memory clinic explained the situation - mum originally assessed in 2014 so another assessment in 2019 was done to document progression .
hope that helps a little

I’ve been trying to get a mental capacity assesment form filled in so we can apply for deputyship for my mother as she has no POA and is in a nursing home , the GP refuses to fill it in, or social services ,
