Hi to all carers You may recall my wife Mollie being four years into alzheimers she has got very disruptive and demands attention at all times. She also is subject to sundowning. She goes to bed at 6.30 every night and shouts and bangs on the floor until I go up to bed.Not only that she was waking me up at least every half hour to tell me the time. I think a lot of carers out there have got the same problems. About a week ago I was just about out on my feet and went to our medicine cupboard and gave Mollie two pills that I had been taking for a nervous breakdown some years ago they are not on prescription. These pills did the trick I now take Mollie two of these pills up to bed and they calm her down in about twenty minutes. I now get a nights sleep and Mollie is also settled.I cannot give the name of the pills on this thread as it could be seen as advertising and if the adjudicators let it go it could open the gates to commercial advertising and thats one thing we dont want in our haven. I think I would be in order in giving anyone who is in the same position as I was the name of these pills that can be bought freely at the chemist should they send me a private message. I feel that we all need as much help as we can get to deal with this dreadful disease. I did consult my doctor and she said the pills wouldnt do Mollie any harm.I must also point out that I have nothing to gain.and I will abide with what the adjudicators rule

Gerrie, thank you for your post, and for taking the 'moderating' in good spirit. I cannot see anything wrong with what you have said, and if the pills are so successful for you, they would be worth trying for others.

I do think it shold be stressed though (as you've already said), that it's important to consult the GP first, to ensure that they are compatible with prescribed medication.

Best wishes,

Dear Gerrie,
You must be feeling so much better with a good night sleep behind you. I am sure other carers may benefit from this medication also. Sorry to hear that Mollie is a little difficult now, hopefully this stage will past soon. I will send you a private message for the name of these tablets. I also find it difficult to sleep. Thank you for your post. Taffy.:)

I have no objection to anyone trying anything to alleviate their distress, indeed I was once in so much pain myself that I would have agreed to drugs that might have killed me.

I don't know what the tablets are, but if they are available over the counter then I can't see any reason for you not to tell us what they are. But I do think anyone using them should check with the pharmacist that they are compatible with other medication that the patient is using, as some can cause terrible side effects.

I visited my GP this week for the first time in years, and I was discussing a drug I was prescribed some years ago, and whether I still needed to take it cos the leaflet with it said "don't take if this, and don't take if that", and he told me that one of the prime reasons for such advice on drugs was not that it was dangerous to take them if... and if.... but that they could make you very ill. So I got the message from that that if they don't make you ill, keep taking them!

Good luck if it helps to give you a break.

My husband takes a natural sleep remedy from time to time, thinks they are wonderful.

Regards

Margaret

I'm sorry Margaret I have removed the name of the product as per previous moderator discussions

Hi All,

I'm just going to throw a caveat in here just in case some one drops by in the future to look at this thread.

"None of the moderators and few group members, are medical professionals. This forum is not meant to substitute professional medical advice. You MUST consult qualified doctors or specialist for diagnosis, treatment and further advice that is appropriate for you. The information provided through this forum MUST NOT be used for diagnosing or treating a health problem or a disease."

I know it is a bit boring, but I think people always need to check contradictions and possible dependancies with their GP etc. Treatement for sleep dissorders in dementia can be a little different in my experience and what works for one person may not work for another - that is the danger.

We also need to be doubly careful as some people are already on other medication and it is often hard for someone with dementia to explain 'how they feel'.

Thanks for sharing and sorry if this sounds a little overcautious.

Kind Regards
Craig

doctors

I am sorry if I have caused you concern craig but I only wanted to share my good fortune I have told everyone who has asked me for the name of the pills to check with their doctor.BecauseI seem to have caused some concern I have been on the manufacturers web site and I was amazed at some of the letters sent to them I have added my appreciation to them. I would have thought that 99 per cent of all carers would check with their doctors anyway In a way I wish I had kept my mouth shut on the other hand if it only gives relief to one carer my trouble will have been worth it

Dear Gerrie,

I think your post is very helpful - and so is Craig's. Craig is making sure no-one misses the importance of proper consultation, which is vital for all.

And you are sharing some (hard won!) wisdom which could be very helpful. My Mum found a particular herbal mixture (over the counter sale) very helpful for sleeping and now recommends it to everyone!! Fortunately, as she is in a home, others cannot obtain it without following proper procedures, so I don't have to be concerned!

The funny thing is, it was me who first suggested it to Mum, and she "pooh poohed" the whole idea. Later, when she finally tried it and it worked, she claimed it as her own discovery! :) Still, that doesn't matter - as long as it works.

I can only imaginme the bliss of some uninterrupted sleep! The last time I faced this was when my children were babies (over thirty years ago!) and I still remember how awful sleep deprivation was.!

Gerrie,

No harm done at all. All I was doing was posting a clear caveat. I try and do this when anyone recommends medications.

That in no way means that anyone should stop posting their experiences regarding meds.

It great to share information like this, but my job is to add a bit of clarity and caution now and then. It doesn't make me the most popular guy, but please don't take it personally or take offence. I'd do the same if anyone posted something similar - even the chairman of the alzheimers society ;)

Hope you forgive me.

Kindest Regards
Craig

pleased to read that the medication work for your wife .

know how you feel , lack of sleep is a horrible feeling .In the past with my mother she use to be like that waking me up all hours of the night asking me what time it is , is it time for breakfast , even sleeping pills would not knock mum out , and I thought that time would never end . lucky for me that as time pass mum sleep more and now mum sleep all night .
