With winter on the way, we know that keeping warm in the home is important. Our Corporate team is working with one of our corporate partners who specialise in heating systems. The aim is to create a blog post to share useful home heating tips, support people to get the best from their current system, and ideas of changes you can make to help save energy and money.

This is a concern about my mother in law who has pretty advanced dementia but lives alone with help from the family. She has one of those coal effect gas fires that is over thirty years old. It is pretty dangerous in that you have to turn on the gas and then use a match to light it. The family want to replace it with something else. The four children are having on-going debates about either removing it altogether or just getting in a portable heater to use instead. I think the portable heater option is probably the way to go, what sort of things do they need to consider when choosing one.? MiL would spend most of the day sat in front of it.

In terms of portable heaters, we use the small Dimplex type radiators at work, they are deemed to be safer than some other makes.
You can get them on castors and they can have different heat settings. This may be a bit complicated depending on MILs ability to learn and use new things. Not sure about the costs of these type of heaters

Hi @Sarasa, we bought an electric 'log burner' fire for mum's room, it's ever so pretty, easy to use, cheap to run and supplements the radiator's when it's really cold.
We put the flame effect on if it's warm enough as mum likes to look at the (pretend) flames.
