I have just joined talking point so I thought I would introduce myself.
My name is Keith and I live in Hertfordshire.
My mother - my only surviving relative has been suffering from a form of dementia for a at least a couple of years. Earlier this year she moved into a nursing home because she could no longer cope at home. It followed the death of her sister and they had lived togther for more than 40 years.
She was confused, forgetting to eat, losing things. couldn't remember anything new that I said or announced and was suffering from haluncinations that caused her to worry neighbours and call the police.
After answering questions like who is the primeminister - no other tests - a diagnosis of vascular dementia was made. But recently a specialist did some bran scans and there are no signs of this form of dementia.
Am I to assume she has alzheimers?
She is generally comfortable in the home, although despite being bed ridden and quite mobile, she has developed a sore which has turned necrotic.
I had a hell of a battle with social services to sort out her care but got there in the end. We own a house jointly so they have put a charge on it and will then seek to recover the funds at a later stage.
