My mother has been sleeping a lot more at night, usually on her back. When she wakes to suee toilet, there is often a red imprint on her skin, usually covering her back, looks like sunburn.

is it a matter of changing mattress, changing her position, adding other extras to help?

Any help appreciated

I have noticed this too on my husband. Often behind his ear is very red where he buries his head under the pillow. It does disappear over the course of the day though. I think it is just the very long period of time they are lying in one position.

I've had that all my life - I have very impressionable skin. :)
This could be sign of prolonged pressure to that particular area causing decreased blood flow to the tissues. It could eventually develop into a pressure ulcer where the skin opens and underlying tissues become damaged and could become a source of infection. The best approach would be frequent change of position to relieve the pressure as much as possible.
