I'm gutted

I have mentioned on here about OHs successful respite. I found a care home that was a very good match for OH, bearing in mind that his short term memory is OK, he doesnt get muddled about where he is and he doesnt go out and get lost. He problems are more that he is unable to do tasks and needs help with everything, including taking a shower. I was therefore really pleased to find a local home that specialises in neurological disorders and so has a younger clientele and had quite a "hotel" feel. Everyone agreed that HO and the home would be a good match, so I worked hard in persuading him that it was his idea to have a little break there - as the manager put it " a holiday hotel with nurses".

OH loved it, the staff were wonderful, it had a good CQC report and it wasnt extortionately expensive. So I planned for him to go again. And also, if Im honest, I was thinking that maybe when it got to the stage when he needed a place permanently, they would be prepared to take him.

Today I got a phone call. His respite has been cancelled. The manager was very apologetic, but basically the building has been found to be structurally unsound and is having to be closed pretty quickly. I felt so sorry for all the residents who will have to find alternative accommodation and it must be awful for staff and especially the manager who has worked so hard to get it running, but, if Im honest Im mostly upset for me, because the thought of this respite was what was keeping me going and now its not there.

I am so sorry to hear this. We build up good plans only to have them whisked away. Just hope you will find a place even better. Xxx

oh @canary how bitterly disappointing
it's kind of you think of the residents and staff …. and perfectly natural to be personally reeling from the blow
I hope the building can be sorted out so there's some hope for the future at least
but that doesn't make the present any easier

I think the care home is to be closed permanently @Shedrech . It is right down on the sea front and there is a lot of subsidence in the area. My best hope is that the owners can get their costs covered by insurance and that they open another home nearby

such a shame, @canary … I guess some things just can't fixed
fingers crossed you're right … those owners sound so on the ball, it would be a travesty for them to be unable to provide folk such a good service

It's never one thing @canary sometimes it feels like circumstances are plotting against us. Hopefully you will find another good place or this place will get the repairs done.

It's a big disappointment but you will find a way somehow.

Hope it is a small problem with the car. Mine died recently and it turned out to be a loose fan belt and easily fixed which was good.

@canary a friendly mechanic is a godsend as far as I am concerned. I drive an old car and would not dream of taking it to a normal garage.

Let's hope he is not away for too long.

Oh no!! What are the sodding chances. When was the respite meant to be? Will you be able to find somewhere else in time?

I agree with you, I just hope something comes up soon. It is tough on the residents, there was a place that suddenly closed near us, it is really hard. I hope there is nothing too serious with the car. A big hug back! Xxx

The respite was going to be second week in November @Kay111 . Fortunately I hadnt booked a holiday or anything and was just going to catch up on sleep and sort a few things out.

Oh Canary I feel for you - I know how much respite means given the pains we have had to go to in order to get ours and all the encouragement I've had to get us there despite all things against us - your words of wisdom have often been invaluable, just wish I could say something back so sending you a hug hold onto it ((((((((((((hug)))))))))))) Ps thats the first virtual hug I've ever sent!

I`m so sorry @canary, for the respite cancellation. What a letdown!

Now the home has to close permanently it will mean more searching for you which you could well do without. I can just imagine how I`d have felt in your shoes.

I do hope you manage to find another home and your OH will be able to accept it.

That is bad news indeed. So sorry to hear this and hope you can arrange respite elsewhere. Fingers crossed they can open up somewhere else x
