I have mentioned on here about OHs successful respite. I found a care home that was a very good match for OH, bearing in mind that his short term memory is OK, he doesnt get muddled about where he is and he doesnt go out and get lost. He problems are more that he is unable to do tasks and needs help with everything, including taking a shower. I was therefore really pleased to find a local home that specialises in neurological disorders and so has a younger clientele and had quite a "hotel" feel. Everyone agreed that HO and the home would be a good match, so I worked hard in persuading him that it was his idea to have a little break there - as the manager put it " a holiday hotel with nurses". OH loved it, the staff were wonderful, it had a good CQC report and it wasnt extortionately expensive. So I planned for him to go again. And also, if Im honest, I was thinking that maybe when it got to the stage when he needed a place permanently, they would be prepared to take him. Today I got a phone call. His respite has been cancelled. The manager was very apologetic, but basically the building has been found to be structurally unsound and is having to be closed pretty quickly. I felt so sorry for all the residents who will have to find alternative accommodation and it must be awful for staff and especially the manager who has worked so hard to get it running, but, if Im honest Im mostly upset for me, because the thought of this respite was what was keeping me going and now its not there.
