I'm a live in carer and for the past 3 years looked after an 85 year old man with dimentia...he was sent home from hospital last Tuesday on the liverpool pathway....he is now on day 12 of no fluids...he appears comfortable thanks to the morphine driver, but he is still producing about 1500ml urine each day...how is this possible? The nurses are stumped!....he is fighting to stay alive and family are becoming distressed? Any info please.....

I don't know, but my mum, too, hung on for almost two weeks. I sat with her holding her hand all day every day.

Eventually the doctor told me to say goodbye, tell her I would be fine and leave. She said that no mother wants to desert her child and that mum was (in some way) hanging on for me. I had to reassure her it was ok to let go. Mum died a few hours later.

Could this be a reason your gentleman is hanging on?
