It's like the old saying that too many times we are prolonging dying, not living. This is something I have thought a lot about @Splashing About. From my very first week as a student nurse back in the 70’s I have seen quantity valued above quality of life. I do not want this to happen to me so I have done my own POA for health and specifically stated that if I need life extending treatment and am unable to give consent due to lack of capacity that consent MUST be withheld. I have had conversations with family and friends re this and just hope that if I get Alzheimers like my mum they will remember.
I completed an Advanced Care Directive for myself last year. I thought it was going to be confronting but it wasn't. My children are my decision makers and it has made it so much easier to talk about 'little' things that I might not have mentioned to them previously. And personally I feel better for having done it.
And there are some brilliant books out there that don't hold back and worth a read.
