How can I persuade my father to see a GP?

For a few years now, my mother has noticed a decline in my 78-year-old father’s mental health. The signs all point to dementia but she doesn’t know how to persuade him to see their GP. He can be aggressive and volatile and this isn’t a conversation she seems able to have. Does anyone have any tips? I live overseas and am unable to travel at the moment. I am concerned about my mother as well. She says the situation is just “something she has to manage” but it’s tough without any support.

@Me64 Would it be possible for your father simply go for an annual check-up? Heart, blood pressure etc. But a letter should go to the GP first, outlining all your concerns and emphasizing how aggressive and volatile he can be. With any luck, the GP will be able to recommend something. It might help if your mother booked an appointment for herself, your father might be more amenable to go to an appointment if she has one also.

This is the time for plenty of love lies. Whatever works is what you should do. I know it goes against the grain of everything we were taught but it is much kinder.

Hello @Me64. Welcome to Dementia Talking Point.

Could your mother see the GP? Perhaps if she had a consultation she could explain what is worrying her so much and let the doctor take it from there.

Thank you both for your kind advice. I shall pass it on. My mother did try talking to the GP herself but was told nothing could be done without my father taking himself into the surgery. I guess it is indeed a time for love lies.

lol good luck . If my mum refuses to go to her assessment next time she loses it and is a threat to my dad I’m calling 999 one way or another she is going to see the specialist before she puts my dad in his grave.

good luck
