Most sheltered housing schemes are run by housing associations.Local authorities have very little involvement in social housing nowadays

If your parents are pensioners have you tried age uk, they may have info on housing options I saw something about renting on their website recently. https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/care/housing-options/specialist-housing-options/ I don't think there are as many in the uk as other countries but what about a retirement village or complex. I remember an online friend telling me about a retirement complex opening not far from them in manchester that you could buy or rent apartments in that were geared up to eldery and disabled residents. Maybe something like that would be suitable for your parents .

My daughter is in a wheelchair and I know how hard it is finding somewhere suitable.....apart from the accessibility problem that may be perceived by the agent, is it possible that they are wary of taking on anyone who is (in their mind) on a benefit and may be unreliable or unable to pay future rent hikes (as soon as you even hint at benefits over here the shutters tend to come down :(). We ended up buying a small unit from our retirement fund simply so that our daughter had somewhere to rent!

I'm a great believer in networking and asking even the most unlikely people, so hopefully someone will come up with somewhere......wishing you lots of luck!

Will your parents be entitled to NHS care when they return? Have they lived abroad for very long? There can be issues.

My mum is in sheltered extra care. It is very different from sheltered. It is worth having a look. Some areas have a lot and some don't. Most are run by housing associations some are private. My mum's is run by a housing association but the local authority social worker does assess needs to see if you need the care provided.

this is the website I used to look for places for mum - I've set the filter to Chester (not actually my town but near me), but you can change it on the left of the page

http://www.housingcare.org/housing-...hire&ca=Chester&stp=1&dtp=2&sm=&vm=list&rp=15

If your mum is resistant to carers it might not be right although your mum isn't invincible and will need help at some stage.

The criteria are different in different areas.

As also mentioned if your parents have been non resident for a while they may not he entitled to help to start with.

Thank you everyone for your replies - I've only just seen them all. Have been busy chasing up other agents and viewing a couple of flats. I've just stopped mentioning the wheelchair and I haven't faced any problems as a result (!). The flats I've seen so far aren't quite right for dad and his wheelchair (really awkward shaped rooms/corridors etc) but I have another viewing tomorrow so fingers crossed!

I think sheltered extra care housing would be ideal if they qualify (the ones I've seen so far need a link to the local area etc - but tbh I haven't done a great deal of research) but I know mum would be too... proud?... to consider that at the moment. I'm not sure if pride's the right word but she's just so resistant to the idea that they might need help. I'm hoping just to get them here, give mum a break, share the responsibility and everything, and then she's a little more settled we can start planning for the future together. Obviously that all depends on how dad is but because he's early onset things seem to be a very slow progression.

(Weirdly I was also at the post office earlier today and a man on a mobility scooter got stuck going into the post office and asked me to give him a push, which I was very happy to. I've never noticed until recently how inaccessible (or at least hard to access) so many places are and now I'm seeing evidence of it everywhere!)
