Anyone know a insurance company that doesn't charge the earth for an unoccupied house?

My advice is to go through a broker. Explain the circumstances exactly as they are and you're likely to get a good deal.

The company with which MIL had her house insurance previously were very understanding about the situation, and agreed to insure the house as it stood empty. There were certain conditions like having to visit it once a week, keeping the heating on or draining down in the Winter etc etc. Have you tried the present company?
