Hi
I took Mum into town this morning and whilst there she fell..for no apparent reason...bruising her nose and splitting her lip. After getting her into a shop for a sit down and a calm down she told me she had fallen earlier that morning at home in the kitchen...backwards...well, more of a slide she said.

We got her to the hospital for a check up and after various tests they told us she has a urine infection and that could cause her to fall.

This is exactly what happened to my Dad 6 months ago and we had his funeral last Wednesday....

It has left me scared and worried about leaving Mum as she is now on her own at home....but I have to work and be here for my family too.

I dont think I can face going through all this again so soon after losing Dad.

Life seems so unfair at times..not for me...but for Dad and now it seems, for Mum...Maybe it wont be the same scenario...I hope not...but all the signs are there yet again...

Just needed to type this out and know that those who read it will understand.

I'm not sure from your post if you mistrust the diagnosis of the urinary tract infection (I mean as the case of her fall) but I have been told more than once by nursing staff that a UTI can have a dramatic effect on an elderly person, so much so that if there is a change in mental state, that's they first thing they check.

Let's hope it is just that

Hi Maria,

I have been going through this. My mum has had 3 UTI since April - it's taken a while to put her on the right anti-biotic but she seems o.k. again now (except she is playing me up tonight).

I also had a UTI a couple of weekends ago, I felt absolutely awful and I could appreciate then what my mother had been through.

Next weekend mum is going into respite and the way I am feeling tonight, I can't wait to have a bit of time for myself.

Best wishes to you all.
Jane

Hi
Thanks for you messages. I do accept the diagnosis and that the UTI has probably been the cause of the falls. 6 Months ago my Father had a UTI and was so poorly with it he went into hospital, then a nursing home, then he died! I am just worried that Mum will not be strong enough to fight it off due to her condition and the fact that Dads funeral was last Wednesday. I am just hoping we dont have the same chain of events with Mum now as we have recently had with Dad...I dont feel strong enough yet to cope with it all again. I still miss Dad dreadfully and dont want to lose Mum too so soon...just me being pessimistic I guess.

Hi Maria,

To me it would be almost unnatural if you weren’t feeling as you are just now, especially given it is such ‘early days’ in terms of losing your dad. I wonder if that, too, has a bearing on your mum contracting an infection or whatever it is that has caused her falls? The healthiest of us can become susceptible to allsorts when we’ve been going through such a stressful time….. (that was also a prompt for the ‘take care of yourself’ mandate!!!)

Maria, from what I know of you here, you WILL face whatever you have to - good or bad.

Hope your mum’s better today,

Big hug, Love Karen (TF)

Hi Maria

I don`t understand how UTI`s can have such dramatic effects but last November my husband fell and broke his arm. He said he`d felt dizzy.
When we got to A+E he too was found to have a UTI infection. The worrying part about it is he had no symptoms at all. No pain, no discomfort and no trouble passing urine. Because of lack of symptoms, we can`t know anything`s wrong.
Hope things will improve for you.

Hello again TP, I’ve been catching up on the postings and this urine infection problem was very similar to what happened to Dad on his birthday of all days last May. He had walked round to see his doctor, a distance of about a mile, only the day before on a routine matter and showed no symptoms at all of what was to happen. I knew something was wrong the next morning when I gave him his daily 6.30 phone call, (to let him know what day it is and that it is now OK to go out to the paper shop etc as he has problems reading the clock). He sounded of a bit under the weather but being as resilient as he is said it was nothing really. By the time I arrived at 8.30 he had got his paper and was cooking his breakfast as he normally does. But at 11.00 he just collapsed like a heap on the floor, I immediately rang for the doctor who arrived about 30 mins later, said his temp was near 100, and he most likely had a water infection so an ambulance was summoned and dad was admitted to hospital where he spend the next week undergoing all sorts of other test which all came back negative so UTI it was. I’ve been making sure he drinks plenty of water especially during this hot spell so he wasn’t dehydrated but nobody has yet explained to me HOW it could have happened so quickly or WHY it happens at all so I still don’t know what steps to take to avoid it happening again. ?????? And that’s after seeing his doctor with my dad after he was discharged. Surely somebody in the medical profession must have the answer.!!!!!!!.......opps sorry, I seem to have rambled on a bit here.

Now I am really scared. My Mom fell and then had a great deal of confusion and later wandered out of the house. She spent 10 days in an assessment unit and we put her in a nursing home yesterday. We found out upon her release from the hospital that she has a UTI and is on antibiotics. Could this be the root of her decline recently? Now what? Should I get her out of the NH and bring her home?
Why is it the medical community does not take UTI into account when doing an assessment? More questions here than answers I'm afraid. I found a web site on Medscape.com doing a search on urinary tract infections and the elderly, I won't post what I found ( copyright) and the link doesn't work to it but it is good info.

Hi Debbie

so sorry about the situation.
Why is it the medical community does not take UTI into account when doing an assessment
unfortunately the medics are so obsessed by their own minute areas of expertise that they hardly ever see a patient as a whole.

A patient is a leg, or a heart, or a brain... or sometimes just a pest.

They are not taught to stand back and say that perhaps that acute back pain is caused by the heavy bag they carry constantly on their left shoulder, or some such.

We had a great comedian called Tommy Cooper in the UK. He had a series of doctor jokes, but they - on reflection - probably show doctors as they should be, not as they are. For example "Doctor, my head hurts when I bang it on the wall like this" Doctor: "then stop banging it against the wall".

Today's doctors might say "here are some pills to take away the pain", or "perhaps you need to see a head specialist" or even "well that's a coincidence, so does mine but I don't know what to do about it either"
