Mother n law, & others, simply sit and stare. Or continue a conversation with themselves. What could be going on in their mind? Memories? Anything? It is very late/advanced in the alzeimers disease.

I'm afraid it is impossible to answer your question. But, in my experience. far more important than what is going on is the question whether it is positive or negative. If someone is sitting either talking unintelligibly or completely silent but is not visibly unhappy, that is a massive bonus. If they are visibly unhappy, it's worthwhile trying to distract them or doing something for them that might brighten their mood e.g. stroking their hand, if they like that, talking to them cheerfully or lovingly, offering food or drink, playing music....
