My father is showing all the classic signs of Alzheimers, he is 71, it has started to have an effect on my mother (69), the problem is he refuses to believe there is anything wrong with him. He also tends to get annoyed when the subject of his health is discussed.

I am looking for advice on how I should approach him to talk about his problems and hopefully convince him to see a Doctor and/or Specialist.

Hello Demps,
Can I suggest you and your mother keep a diary identifying areas of behaviour that have given you cause for concern.
Then you can both see your father`s GP, with written timed and dated evidence to support your concerns.
Your father`s GP will then be able to suggest a way forwards.
I hope this helps.

Demps,
Does your Dad have any regular GP check ups for other medical things? The way I got round it was by writing to my Dad's GP and telling him about the memory problems, and he agreed to check him out at his next regular blood pressure check up. Even if he doesn't have regular checks you could ask the GP to contact him and suggest a general 'MOT'.

I agree with the other two.
my dad spoke to my step-mother's GP first then I made apoinment for her to go but told her the GP wanted to see us about dad getting some help she was happy to go with that.
you could speak to the gp first then get him there with the same excuse
good luck

Dear Demps, When my dad showed signs of dementia I rang and spoke to his GP who was great and made an appiontment for me to take my dad to see him. We told my dad that it was for a check up etc., and while we were there the GP tested his memory and as a result reffered him to a consultant. Hope this is of help, Marion x

agree with the other posts the only way I could get mum to the doctors was to say I was taking her to get her blood pressure checked (I had already phoned g.p. to say I was concerned) He was great he asked her questions she should have known but didn't and then told mum the nurse was going to weigh her in the other room. while she was gone he spoke to me and told me he was going to refere her straight the way. bless when she came back she had no concerns and I took her home. All other assesments were done at home (apart from mri which was a bit more difficult-but a bribe of fish & chips worked in the end)
