Hey everyone, nice to find such an informative site where others are going through or have been through similar things we are.
As you can see my name is Ken, in july my mother (aged 86) was been diagnosed with Alzheimers & Dementia and she's is currently going through a tough time in hospital with infections and kidney trouble by not drinking enough. The list is endless with what we are going through at the moment and by reading some posts since my visit here alot have gone through similar.
Since i'm new here i have alot of reading/catchup's to do. So without ado i will get browsing and learn as much as i can to help my mother through the tough time and learn along the way.

Regards Ken.

Hello Ken, welcome to TP.
I am sorry to hear about Mother being ill and in hospital, I hope you are happy with her care there.

We do have a lot of helpful fact sheets on here, if you click on Alzheimer's society resources just under the light blue line near the top of each page, you will find a link to them.

Please feel free to ask questions,I think it's so much easier than searching for answers.

Why not start you're own thread on one of the main forums, you can find them all here
http://forum.alzheimers.org.uk/forum.php,
just choose the one you prefer and click on post new thread.

Thank you Lin, just had word from my sisters who have just left from visiting. She is a little perkier today but will have to see a specialist about the kidney. She is acute to chronic state at the moment, so will have to wait and see. I'll be in tonight to see her and can't wait since she sounds abit better than last nights visit.

Many Thanks Ken.

Hi and welcome
i hope tonights visit is better. Hospital is so tough for people with memory loss - it is a busy and confusing environment and often the nurses are too busy (or don't think it is their job) to assist with feeding and drinking. Can I suggest that you ask for support for her at mealtimes and between times from a care support assistant. Most hospitals are supposed to do this but sadly they do not unless they are specifically asked to put it into the care plan. They can provide one to one - but you need to insist it is in the care plan

Good luck, do keep posting

Thanks Fizzie, tonights visit was great. Much better than yesterdays, although she still thinks she at home some of the time. She is currently on the dementia ward and its fairly well supported for her needs (atleast it appears so). The nurses are lovely and seem to be very helpful. Think its gonna be a abit of a journey yet although if she keeps on improving i think they are talking about letting her goto a nursing home to continue the nursing care. Hopefully from there she can evenually get closer to home in a care home (up the road from where we live). Kidney trouble is still a worry atm though, until she sees a specialist.
