Had to call the doctor out.

Mums depression has been getting worse and worse in spite ( or maybe because of the medication that she was prescibed ) until today when she just didn`t want to get out of bed at all.

I called the doctor out to her and he was very good , we had a long talk about the situation . Thankfully she`s not dehydrated and although she`s not eating he wasn`t too concerned as physically she`s really good.

He`s taken her off all her medication except for the Aricept and thankfully off the Temazapam which she`s been taking for years to help her sleep and which were two years out of date ! She was really concerned about this so am expecting a phone call in the early hours asking where her tablets are `cos of course she won`t remember.

He did however advise me to start looking for a NH although I think we can keep her at home quite a while longer.....she`s so resistant to leaving her flat (and wouldn`t we all feel the same ) but at least he is now going to contact Social Services so we might get some support with her care .

Just want to say thankyou for the ongoing support and to Sylvia for PM .

Hi Jeannie

So sorry to hear your mum's deteriorating. I do hope you manage to get some help from SS. It sounds as if some company during the day for your mum would help.

Presumable the GP thinks she'll be OK without the medication, but you may find her agitated without the temazepam. It's quite adictive, and may take some time to get out of her system if she's been on it for a while. I'm surprised he didn't suggest a reduced dose to wean her off it. She'll may have difficulty sleeping.

It's going to be tough for a while, but post here and let us know how you are getting on.

Love,

Hello Hazel

Funnily enough although he told me she`d been on it for years when she said to him she wouldn`t sleep without it he just said it wouldn`t matter if she didn`t sleep !

I`m a bit concerned and not sure I have a great deal of faith in him as when she first went to see him with Glaucoma he prescibed something detrimental to the condition , its a long time ago and I can`t remember if it was cortizone or some sort of steroid all I can hope is that along with all the other medication she was taking it was very hit or miss and maybe she`s not actually been taking it any way with her memory problems !

What a sympathetic soul!

A few sleepless nights might not be the end of the world for your mum, but you're the one who will have to cope with the aftermath. Perhaps some temazepam for you?:D

I`m doing fine with the red wine my little noisette !!

I must admit when I read the label on the packet it did say not to be taken with alcohol so I immediatly lost interest !

Hi Jeanie, Sorry to hear about your mum.

I`m beginning to get increasingly concerned about all this medication. I sometimes think we are being prescribed medication to balance the side effects of other medication.

If your mother was taking temazepam for years, why was it out of date? Is it because she wasn`t taking them as regularly as you or the GP thought?

She does need someone to go in every day and possibly some home care, if she`ll have it.

I wish you luck with SS. They might be able to provide some extra help.

Take care

Love xx

Hi Sylvia

I reckon she`s actually been failing for years we just didn`t recognise what was going on. After the doctor left we went through her flat and filled a carrier bag full to the brim with out of date medication I really can`t exaggerate how much we came across.

I remember when I went with mum over a year ago as we were leaving her Dr asked if she needed anything off her repeat presciption .... now i`m thinking as she seems to have been requesting everything on there every time that at the very least he was guilty of not monitoring her usage of said medecines very carefully.

I`m hopeful that if its a choice between a NH and having some homecare she`ll opt for the latter and bless her her main concern still seems to be to stop me worrying about her and not wanting to be a nuisance.

Hope you`re having an easier time with Dhiren.

Jeanie,

It`s only when you look back with hindsight, you realize how many clues were missed.
My mother always said she had to write everything down as she had such a poor memory.
My husband showed uncharacteristic behaviour as far back as 1999, but I failed to see it for what it was.

I hope your mum does get some home care.

Dhiren is very unhappy. He feels he is getting worse every day, and the more he worries the worse he seems. He keeps asking to see specialists, and I feel awful, as if he thinks I`m not trying hard enough to get help for him.

Thanks for asking.

If only!!!!
I hate seeing Peg in hospital with a drip,a catheter.
Being pulled and pushed about.
I know it is all for her own good, but it hurts.
All our married life I have protected and kept her safe ,now I am helpless.
Your quote is so true.
Norman.

So nice to hear from you Norman and feeling how much you love Peg I tried to put me and Danny in your place.

Danny has looked after and nurtured me all our married life ( 36 years ) and I`m certain he would feel exactly the same as you.

When I read your post and thought about it I realised the difference between caring for a parent and caring for the person you love the most in the whole wide world .....because they have been and continue to be ,albeit under dreadful circumstances, the person you love the most in the whole wide world and with this realisation I feel so sad for everyone in this position and bizarrely I`m counting my blessings that however hard this is my mum has had a good life and I`ve always and continue to do my best for her but Danny is my life , my love , my best friend and my soulmate and to have to cope with and lose the brightest star in your sky ........well what can I say except with all this heartache must come the realisation of how much you love and though it must be hard to see are loved in return ....I`m sorry I`m rambling maybe not expressing myself verywell but my heart goes out to everyone in this position.

So thankyou Norman I think I`ve gained some perspective tonight.
