Grief depression or dementia

Hi. I'm new on here. I'm so worried. My father is in end of life care in a care home after having parkinsons for 10 years. He is 69 and my mum who is 70 has been his carer. All of a sudden she has started to have visual hallucinations, mainly of Dad. She leaves doors open, thinks the dog is her baby and feeds her human food. She can't find keys, phone, glasses and struggles to write as she used to. She has lost interest in cooking and forgets to eat. A CT scan has shown vascular "stuff" but they want to pursue an anxiety/depression route for 3 months and have put mum on antidepressants. I am at my wits end worrying and coping. Can "grief" anxiety cause these things or is it vascular dementia. This has all happened so quick and I hate seeing her so "confused". Please help. Thank you.

hello @tillyt
welcome to TP
what a lot you have on your plate - I'm sorry to read of your dad's situation and appreciate how worried you must be for your mum
grief and stress certainly can take their toll, so I guess the medics want to cover that possibility - maybe keep a diary for a couple of weeks with notes on your mum's behaviour, your concerns and everything you have to help her with - then show this to her GP/consultant and ask that they give more consideration to the symptoms you've evidenced
I wonder whether some of the info on the main AS site will be of interest eg
https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/info/20064/symptoms/264/apathy_anxiety_and_depression/4
https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/info/20007/types_of_dementia/5/vascular_dementia https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/info/20046/help_with_dementia_care/411/grief_loss_and_bereavement/5

now you've found TP, keep posting - it helps to share worries with folk who understand

Hello Tillyt,

I can understand your worries as these changes seem very quick. In answer to your question, stress and grief can cause these symptoms, or possibly seeing as there are already changes visible in her CT scan, exacerbate some symptoms or behaviours that were already there.

I hope your dad is settled - do you know if your mum's symptoms are worse after she's gone to see him?
