I,m all for that and delighted is says medically unfit but it also says people taking drugs I have always agreed with everyone with a medical problem being reported and taking a driving test or assessment if they wish to continue we must remember the doctor can only report on your medical condition he is not a qualified driving examiner , so yes bring it on . I also think when a person reaches a certain age they should stop say 80 you automitically loose your driving licence similar you can't drive a car until your 17

A certain age?

Just as well the cancer specialist didn't rule out an operation for me because of my age.

Chronological age is is one thing, physical and mental age is something else. There are people who have lived thirty and forty years and their minds and bodies are more like someone that's lived 60, 70 or 80 years. That may be due to life style or genes. At 84 I'm still capable of running faster then many people half my age and I find my reactions are faster than many young drivers. 'We are all different'.

Hello Tony
I am rather surprised to read your comment
I also think when a person reaches a certain age they should stop - say 80 you automatically loose your driving licence

I have always respected your posts on driving subjects , bearing in mind your own position and raising the case against arbitrary selection
Surely your argument in this matter of 'age discrimination ' should be the same as that you advocate for Alzheimer's patients
I have many friends in their eighties who still drive and in my opinion are no more danger on the road than many younger people
By all means improve the current legislation on driving ability , but do not discriminate a person because they reach a certain age ,unless you have proof of their
inability to be a safe driver

When OH was diagnosed with AD, the geriatrician was required by law to report it to the local motor licensing authority. He underwent an assessment and lost his licence.

However, he had been a danger on the roads for 18 months prior to that. I had reported it and our GP was required to complete a medical assessment which was OK at the time.
The GP could not have been able to make any judgment about his driving capacity so there was no cause for him to mandatory report. So I am not sure how it could work successfully.

Mental health told DVLA about my husbands Alzheimers and after his driving assessment which he passes with no faults , he kept his licence but only a yearly one and is tested every year which I think is good . He just had his assessment and we are waiting for his new licence to come through the post .

Hi jumbo yes I agree with you and what your saying and I have alway supported a driver with dementia shouldn't stop driving if they are capable. The point I was making I started driving tractors at age of 8 at the age of and had to wait until I was 16 to ride a motorcycle on the roads and 17 to drive a car I expect there are hundreds of children anything under the driving license age driving go-carts motor cross Lewis Hamilton was racing at age of 9 , so if we have a start age why not a finish age , I wouldn't give up my licence because of my dementia but if a law was passed the everyone's driving licence was revoked at a given age then it's fair for all I myself will be eighty in seven years would be my worst nightmare if I lost mine I was only making a suggestion and it's great to reach old age if your fit and well my parents lived to the age of 85 dad 93 mum my comments weren't meant to be disrespectful to older people just making the comparison between start age and finish age. but as far as discrimination goes most Car Hire Companies charge an additional rate for over 75 and some wont rent you a Car at all so they must think after 75 were all suspect

Hi chick1962 like your husband I was given a 12 month driving licence for 12 years was never ask by dvla to take a test and every year I tried to get my full licence back because with a 1 year licence it's very difficult with insurance ect and you loose a lot of the driving categories and definitely could get insurance for a motorcycle so after 12 years I paid for a driving assessment myself filmed myself driving in Majorca got letters fro insurance agents and Car Hire companies I used for years abroad letter fro dementia consultant and G.P and decided to see what the Courts would say dvla gave a full licence ok because I over 70 it's only three years but it not a medical licence it the same as every other 70 year old which is how it should be must diving is not about my illness is about my ability to drive ,

Exactly Tony so agree with you :) Hubs was police armed response driver and before that Central Government . He is more trained than any normal driver . He is 66 so might take a fight to DVAL to get this 3 year licence?! Thank you :)
