Fluid on brain in CT and MRI just part of progression

My mum was diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2016, she is now 72 years old and has declined rapidly over the past 9 months. After a recent admission to hospital after a fall her CT scan showed fluid on brain. This was followed up by an MRI confirming this and a Lumbar Puncture was planned. This did not take place however following a review of her scans by neurology in another hospital. It was explained that the fluid resulted from her advanced stage of disease. I am finding it difficult to find studies indicating that this is standard progression, if you have any experience or have come across relevant articles I would be so grateful if you could let me know. Many Thanks
