Hello all,

I'm hoping someone can help. Does anyone know how to locate a will of someone who is still alive? My partners mother cannot remember when, where or who she registered her will with. Her husband has dementia and also cannot remember.

Any help would be much appreciated as the internet keeps pointing me towards companies who require payment.

Regards,

Could the question also be "if"? Because a lot of people don't register their wills. If your partners mother believe she has made a will and used a solicitor, I would suggest that contact any solicitors she might have used in the past. Also you could send standard letter to all the solicitors in her area (this will obviously be easier if you are in a small town rather than a big city).

P.S. You could try this http://www.ukprofessionalwillregistry.co.uk/search_will.php which appears to be free.

My only suggestion would be looking through their paperwork, there maybe letters or an invoice relating to it, people do tend to keep that sort of thing. If you can find out who they used when they bought or sold a house (possibly from the estate agent) as people tend to stick with the same solicitor even if they move out of an area they don't always move the will to someone local.
The law society had an article on this (link below) there may be something useful in there, you can contact the law society as if the will is registered (and you seem to say it is) then I believe they can tell you.
I don't know (although I might be wrong) that other than confirming they hold the will you can be told anything other than that, when you do find it that is, you won't get a copy or be told the contents.
Good luck in your search.
