direct payments scheme

Hello, new to this forum (or any forum!)
Looking after Mum with vascular dementia, who lives independently nearby.
Have carers help as well.
DWP came and assessed how much Mum must contribute to care.
While there, the Direct payments scheme was mentioned. Where family act as employer and organize care. I asked if a family member could be employed? I think it involves the family member becoming self employed?
Has anyone experience of this?

Hi redsox, we had a similar conversation with Mum's social worker this week and you can employ a family member providing they do not live with mum. If they have another job they can be self employed, but if it will be their only paid work they must be employed by the caree. Some councils will also provide the payroll if the carer is not self employed, you just have to submit time sheets. In this case mum's contributions will need to be a standing order to the council.

I have phoned soc worker and she is referring me to the direct payments dept. who will come and discuss the options with me.

I have used the Direct Payments system for a few years now and highly recommend it. Our situation will probably be quite different though as we live in Scotland.
