Digital clock

My Nan has vascular dementia and gets very confused as to what time it is, and what date. I have looked online for digital clocks with large figures that display both the date and time but they are either £70+ or have the date in the American format of year first. Can anyone recommend a clock and perhaps also send a link? Thanks so much!

You should be able to get clocks via the Social Services. Here in Norfolk we have a company call Enable who supply such things. My mum has two digital clocks, but really doesn't make a difference to her, present time is whatever time she wants it to be with Alzheimhers.....hopefully your Nan isn't there yet. Good luck

I see what you mean about costs

I bought the clock below for my mum last year and it was a huge success. She'd even (then) try to trip me up by getting me to say the wrong day etc. She has loved it. BUT I am sure it has gone up hugely in price...ridiculous really. So I agree, do try social services, they may be able to provide something

Good luck :)

Aldi Clock

Just a word of warning re Aldi clock - if it is the same or similar to the one we got from Lidl for Mum last year it is radio controlled from Germany. That is to say, when daylight saving changes kick in the signal updates to the time in Germany! yes you can change manually but when the next signal is received clock updates again:(

Has led to some confusion and sometimes the explanation sticks but sometimes not!!!!

We got one like this on Amazon.
White 'Perpetual' Calendar Clock - G239A

The good think is it adjusts itself every month, the only thing u have to do is when the clocks change. It is also available in silver. They have the same. One in my local building society.

Thank you all very much but unfortunately most of these ideas are over £100 and I simply don't have that sort of money and we do not have social services support. My nan is terrified by strangers and so that isn't an option for us. Are there any cheaper options that anyone has found?

Not answering question, but OH does not seem to be able to cope with digital clock, and we have several, but used a normal clock much longer. I think he just did by position of the hands rather than reading figures.

This one is just less than £70 but still very pricey!

Does your nan need date, time, day or all three? Might be able to get it cheaper if, for example, you only want the day or date?

A round analogue type clock, or a digital display?

I agree, these are wildly expensive on the whole ......:(

This discussion has come up a few times since I've been a member and if you want the day and date then £70 is the minimum I'm afraid.

I bought this one for my mum from one of the recommendations - a whopping £9 postage as well

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Desktop-Per...r0&keywords=Perpetual'+Calendar+Clock+-+G239A

All the cheap ones that are on amazon need a manual changing of the date every month so when I am not there just wouldn't work.

My mum absolutely loves it. She hadn't known what day of the week it was for months and with this she does.

This is the same one that I got, JM :) And my mum loved it, too. Yes, it's very expensive, but it's definitely been worth it in terms of maintaining mum's confidence for as long as possible :)

You can get SD cards on eBay with a 'day clock' program. They work in a standard digital photo frame. We paid £12 for one.
Unfortunately we discovered we need a new frame as ours doesn't have the option to cycle hourly, only 3mins- which leads to a very short day!
Search for memory aid clock SD.

Thank you all very much. Unfortunately I simply cannot afford that. Please don't think I don't think my nan is worth it, but my mum and nan are both widowed and so I am supporting them both financially and so these sorts of wonderful additions are difficult to find the money for even when I work full time! Wouldn't it be lovely if we didn't have to pay such a supplement for mobility aids!

Oh, I absolutely agree, claireizz, these aids should be available via the NHS. In fact I went searching to see whether I could get something around here - sadly, I couldn't :(

Will post again if I find anything :)

£100 or so for a digital clock just because it is labelled an elderly assistance aid is ludicrous. Will keep on searching!

Oh god I am so sorry I sound so ungrateful but I found loads of similar clocks to this but the month rather than the day is first - the American format - and this would really confuse her even more. Thank you for trying!

Of course you don't sound ungrateful! I know how difficult it is to get just the right thing when seeking aids for our LOs. No use getting something that will cause more confusion or unpleasantness ;). Good luck with the hunt x

You are doing really well to do this - I presume you have made sure Attendance allowance is being claimed and all other benefits for both of them.

I am a bit cautious with the specialist disability places, I needed a key safe for my mum, and it was £15 in Argos or on Amazon - and £70 was the cheapest from the local disability aids shop.

The expensive clock is £70 on Amazon but it does work very well giving a clear day of the week as well as month, and the time. Its also nice and big. It saves my Mum a great deal of confusion and gives her a little more feeling of being "with it"

There is a market waiting to be cracked by the right company as £70 is a scandal.
