My mother-in-law and father-in-law have moved to an independent living facility near us. We have them settled in. My husband and I have not been given the official word on her memory loss, but it is bad. We would like to start the new year off with getting help but we are at loss of where to go? She is taking meds for memory loss given by her old GP but we think we should go to a specialist to get further testing. She is having issues with panic/anxiety attacks, mimicking heart attacks, and urinate retention. I just need guidance on what steps to take. My father-in-law is overwhelmed and in denial. I would like to get us ahead of the future. Any suggestions?

Has she attended the Memory Clinic? If so they should appoint a CPN (community psychiatric nurse) to oversee her medication. These nurses are also very good at pointing you in the right direction for what she needs in terms of home care, day care, other forms of help. Do they have access to Alz groups in the area which they could attend together? Even if she is quite severe she might get pleasure from Singing for the brain or similar.

Otherwise you need to contact the local social service office for a care assessment to find out what is on offer.

Have they registered with a new GP? If so that will be your first stop.

Have you got health & welfare power of attorney? If not they please consider getting it as it does help you to get information.
