my mum has alzheimers, and needs to a dentist. She has a partial dentures but her mouth has shrunk so they are falling out. She has one tooth left on her lower jaw. but is complaining of tooth ache. Despite repeated requests to her care home for help they don't seem to know what they're doing.

Does anyone know a good nhs dentist in nottingham who is is experienced in treating someone with alzheimers and understands.

Mum will be accompanied by her family. We are desperate.

I don't know Nottingham or much about dentists, shadow. However, for what it is worth, the dentist I have been taking OH to lets me come in with her to consultations and is happy to let me answer most questions on her behalf, as indeed she is. Whether that works for you and your mum is another matter. Best I can advise, so just leave you with best wishes. Rob

We can't make recommendations here as this is against forum rules. However, someone with dementia is eligible to be referred to a community dental service that also does home or care home visits. They are specialised in dealing with difficult patients who either are afraid of dentists or might not be able to understand instructions. OH has been seeing them for a while and they are absolutey brilliant. They've been to our home once and the rest of the time go to his day centre. They always phone me afterwards and give a detailed rundown on what they did.

Try and find the one for your area and give them a call. I don't understand though why her care home can't do this as I am sure they have other residents with dental needs?

I thought that was strange as well, in my area both the community dental and optician services are proactive and visit care home for annual check ups as well as on request.

Tell me about it - two years in a row OH has come home from the Day Centre with new glasses now - I think the next annual optician visit is due soon. The dentist sees him every three months, Foot Health every two. He gets better service than I do!

It is, but it's not the Day Centre that does this, it's the community services. Once you're in their books, they are mostly good. I don't even remember how he got recognised by Foot Health, he just started receiving letters one day about his toe nails.
