Hello everyone,

I wanted to share some news with you – our online community Talking Point is updating our name – we are now Dementia Talking Point! This is part of a project to review the names of our support services and ensure that people understand what we do.

A clearer identity

If you’ve ever tried putting Talking Point in a google search, you will find an excellent charity with this name that helps children to develop speech, language and communication skills. You’ll also find a company that specialises in speech recognition equipment, and a film and television industry training provider!

I’m sure you’ll all agree that this could be confusing for people who want to find this community, to talk about dementia and share experiences with others.

We support everyone who is affected by dementia

Our new name Dementia Talking Point will also make it clear that we are here for people dealing with all forms of dementia – not just Alzheimer’s Disease. We know that rarer forms of dementia aren’t well represented on our community and we’d like to change that. If you have any ideas about how we could do this, please let us know.

We are part of Dementia Connect

Alzheimer’s Society is rolling out a new support service called Dementia Connect. This service connects people to the right support, at the right time, in the right way; combining face-to-face support with telephone, print and online advice and information. Also, our online directory will now be known as the Dementia Directory.

What will happen next

Over the next few weeks, you will see changes made to reflect the new service names, including Dementia Talking Point. This will include a slight change to our community’s design, new flyers, and updates where services are mentioned on Alzheimer’s Society website and social media.

I hope this is clear but if you have questions or comments, please feel free to reply to this thread or contact me by emailing talkingpoint@alzheimers.org.uk

If they are doing a bit of a tweek to design, is it possible to put in simple - oh, not sure if they are emojis, but so that we can just 'like' a comment ....

No, please dont do "likes".
It sounds like a good idea, but I have been on a forum which changed to having a like button and it completely changed the dynamics. It felt like people were posting stuff simply in order to get "likes". Even I, who hated it, found (to my shame) that I was miffed when people didnt "like" my posts.
Many people post on here in trepidation, thinking that they will be judged - how many times have you seen people asking "Does that sound awful?". If there are "like" buttons, they could well be put off.
This isnt facebook, or similar where we have to post a sanitised version of our lives in order to acquire likes in order to boost our self esteem. Its a forum full of damaged people who can tell it as it is. Sometimes we have to post unpopular views.

Thanks, Sylvia. I hope so too.

@maryjoan the topic of a like button has come up many times before on Talking Point and broadly the majority of members prefer replying to each other. That way members connect with each other through replies without concerns about being 'liked'. If you'd like to start a separate discussion on this topic, you're welcome to do so.

I'd like to keep this discussion for responses about the new name for Talking Point, and ideas to see more responses from people affected by all forms of dementia.

Thanks,

Serena

I think the name change is a really good idea, and better reflects the community here.

With regards covering the rarer forms of dementia, the general info about the forum refers to "anyone who is affected by any kind of dementia". Could you expand this to say something like "including rarer forms of dementia such as ....." and list the rarer forms? This would mean that the forum would be listed if anyone entered one of the specified rarer types of dementia into an internet search engine.

Yes, I do like the new name - it makes sense.

I like the new name. My husband has Dementia with Lewy Bodies which isn't well known (though not uncommon) and I am helped greatly by the Alzheimers Society. Hopefully there will be a spin off for fund raising too as people become aware that all types of dementia are included.

New name is very welcome indeed. The new service is interesting, it sounds as if it is what's needed.
Please no ' likes' though it sound judgmental and the thing I have found is that members on here are supportive and do not judge another's situation.

Delighted to hear you doing this, more revelant to the A to Z of this horrible disease, and all us poor relatives and friends looking for a port in the storm of coping, to which you have now manifested this with your site, delighted to hear your acknowledgement of this need to widen the net sadly due to its increase. Thank you.
