I notice that sometimes when I look at who is online, a person's name has + after it. What does this mean? I'm thinking maybe they are in the process of writing a message????

I don`t Joanne, or if I do, I`ve never noticed. But then my observational skills are not the best.

It will be interesting to see what others `see`.

you see the plus sign i think when youve added someone to your buddy list

And we have a winner! Donna is quite correct, a plus sign indicates someone who is on your buddy list.
