Update

Some of you kindly replied to my query re NHS continuing care. Dad has now been detained in hospital under section 3 of the mental health act (he was admitted under section 2). I have been told that this will trigger free after care under Section 117 and that this will mean follow on residential care in a challenging behaviour unit will be paid for. I am not sure whether this free care will stop should his aggression diminish, however, so that he is able to return to an EMI nursing home. Does anyome have any experience of this? The hospital unit he is currently in is excellent - small, well staffed, clean and comfortable and much more able to deal with his current needs that the home he was in, so I am actually quite relieved that the doctors have taken this action, albeit it was stressful at the time. They are trying to reduce his aggression with different medication so that he can be transferred to the challenging behaviour unit. I just hope he doesn't end up moved around too much as that cannot help his condition.

Hi blue sea,

Sorry I can't help re:Section 117. I just wanted to say that I'm glad that you're happy with the care that your father is receiving in his hospital unit. I'm sure it was stressful at the time, but it sounds like he's got the specialist attention that he needs.

Take care,

Sandy
