My husband and I share a credit card account. He is the main account holder and I am the named card holder.

I am in the process of registering his EPA. I am unhappy about him carrying a valid credit card.

So I have applied for a credit card account in my own name. I cannot open a new account until the old one has been cancelled. I cannot open a new account until Three Months have passed since the cancellation of the old card.

Is that because you are trying to get a card from the same provider as your current joint card? If so then try someone else, they might even give you a few months interest free credit (if you want it).
The reason i ask is, when I got married I tried to open a joint current account with the bank where I had my own current account and because the account came as standard with a £100 overdraft facility they wouldn't let me have two accounts - because they didn't like the idea of giving two o/draft facilities to one person.

Thank you John.

I hadn`t thought about two credit facilities as I have never made use of them. I have a credit card for convenience only, and settle the balance every month.

But thank you for your suggestion to apply to another provider. I shall do just that, and my original provider can whistle.

John's right, Sylvia.

If you're anything like me, you're getting offers of credit cards through the post almost every week. Find the one that suits you best (google 'credit cards' to find the best deal), and don't close the present one until the new one is up and running. Once you've closed it, you can safely let Dhiren carry the expired one in his wallet.

It might also be a good idea to see if you can find an expired bank card and substitute it for the 'live' one!

Thanks Hazel.

On reflection I think I`ll just use a Debit card from now on and cancel the credit account.

Hi there,
I was in the same position. I opened one with a new provider and cancelled the joint one. Had to send my POA, but even then they wern't happy to follow my instruction. But when I advised verbally and it writing that they would be fully liable if the card was used fraudulently (as I can cut up both cards) it was surprising how quickly they cancelled the account!

Jackie, I like your spunk.

Sylvia, I would also recommend that you right a letter to the credit agencies and let them know the situation. Maybe put a hold on HIS name. I have done that with mom as she gets tons of offers for credit cards. Everything goes out of the house shredded. I guess what I'm saying is use your POA to safegaurd his identity. I'm sure the US is not the only place that has to worry about it and unfortunately AD victims are at the top of their lists.!:mad::mad:

Thank you Jackie and Nancy.

I will write, when I have a mind to and cancel the card, and lose them a customer.

I buy almost everything on credit card and settle at the end of the month. I can just as easily pay by debit card.

Worth bearing in mind, Sylvia -- if you don't have a credit card, and then decide at a later date that you want one, or perhaps want HP, you might find it difficult, because your credit rating would have lapsed.

Your decision, of course, but in your shoes I'd have a new account.

Fair point Hazel.

For now Dhiren is not going anywhere or buying anything so i have time on my side.

Since he has been in hospital he has stopped asking for his wallet and keys.

When he comes home, i will wait and see.

Hi Sylvia - two points:

1) it's good to raise this issue as many people dealing with POAs/EPA/LPA need to understand the different legal position between being an 'additional cardholder' on a credit card account compared to being a joint account holder on a typical bank/savings/mortgage account ....

2) Debit cards do not give the protection many credit cards do re 'purchase protection' ...... in itself that is a 'free service' if people use credit cards as you do for regular spending and full settlement. I have used this scheme in the past when delivered 'faulty goods' and without the backing of the credit card company intervening with the retailer on my behalf would no doubt have had a far more difficult time getting matters corrected.

Imagine you had to buy a piece of specialist equipment for Dhiren at some point in the future? Would you not prefer to have the additional backing of making payment where you have extra assurities?

Just thoughts, and I know in the great scheme of things not so important ..... I do recall mum's credit card company being a total pain at the time I registered EPA :(

Love, Karen, x

I didn`t think of that. Thank you. I do need a credit card.
Now I have to find one that doesn`t expect me to have the minimum income of a millionnaire.

One caompany [for the over 50`s ] insists on a minimum income of £12,000. Applying as a couple is one thing. As a singleton is quite an other.

I wonder how many people have explored this subject in this situation as you have here, Sylvia.

Have noted all the valid points made to help you because our local AZ Society is holding well attended meetings of carers and have never heard this subject raised before. So will suggest they air it to help someone in your situation.

Thank you Sylvia and everyone.

Thanks jennifer. :)

I could kick myself . I had a store credit card which was also a visa. I was talked into it as the first month`s purchases were with a 15% discount.

So I bought what I needed and then cut the card up as I didn`t want to get involved with two payments.

Ah but did you actually cancel it? Some of these stay in effect until you officially close them.

Can I point everyone in the direction of moneysavingexpert.com for brilliant advice on the best credit/debit cards to get and how to get one over on the card companies. This site is brilliant for advice on loads of financial things (insurance, travel, bank accounts, utilities etc.). It's run by a guy called Martin Lewis who writes in a couple of papers and has a slot on a Radio 2 show - there is no advertising on his site and he is not in the pocket of any of the companies he mentions. Follow this guys advice and you could save hundreds of pounds. :):)

Just wanted to agree with Chrish and Jenniferpa, look at moneysavingexpert.com. Terrific site for financial info. As to your bank Sylvia and the three month timeframe. I had a similar problem with mine when I got divorced, (had banked with them for twenty years at that point, single and then a joint account) went to open an account in my name and was told I could open an account but could not have debit and credit cards as I had no credit rating!!!? Needless to say I told the bank manager (it was in the days of the bank manager:))to scrub the application very politely :D and opened one elsewhere.
