Hi
I have not a clue what to do next. My Mum has been in hospital since 19th May, she was originally admitted from her CH with a UTI, whilst in hospital her mobility declined and her CH will not have her back, she was transferred to our community hospital where the discharge facilitator and Mental Health Nurse said she needs an EMI place [she has challenging behaviour]and applied for CHC funding which still hasn't been sorted. 3 weeks ago Mum was taken from the community hospital back to the acute hospital because of another UTI and pneumonia both treated successfully, there has been a "stand off" between hospitals as to what happens next and Mum was left on a medical ward. I had a call from the matron and arranged a meeting thinking it was about mums move etc but to my horror I was told that Mum had been mistreated by a member a staff which had been escalated to safeguarding who had informed the police who are now investigating [but I have not heard anything from them]. Mum was transferred back to community hospital on Friday but is screaming constantly, she holds my hand very tightly but is unable to communicate and hardly eats or drinks. I hate seeing her like this and want to sort it for her but I don't know how.

Hi Fluffyduck,

I feel so bad for you. At least the hospital got onto the abuse of your mum instead of denying it and dealt with it themselves. I know from my own experience hospital often means hell for dementia patients. My dad accused one of the nurses of mistreating him, but it got swept under the carpet as the ramblings of a demented man.

Having said that, I hope you can get your mum into somewhere safe and best for her soon. Can't offer you any suggestions, just support.

OMG how awful . I hope the hospital and police deal with that unspeakabley ........ person to your satisfaction.
I also hope your Poor mum recovers from her ordeal quickly, it is terrible to see someone you love so distressed.
I'm sorry I have no suggestions on how to help your mum through this , other than to gently reassure her that she is safe now. Which I'm guessing you are already doing.

Can you see the ward manager or sister in charge and make an appointment to see her doctor yourself? There must be something they can do to calm her if she is in such distress. Preferably she should be seen by a dementia specialist. I am sorry you and she are having such a terrible time.

I agree with you about a Dementia Specialist Nita.

fluffYduck. If you're in the UK, you might find Admiral Nurses helpful , they are not hands on Nurses but their speciality is Dementia , sadly they are few and far between however they do have a national helpline.

Also I would ask the community hospital to contact a psychiatrist who specialises in dementia if your mum is no longer under a specialist care.
I don't know about the community hospital your Mum is in, the one I have been in very recently for rehab was GP led and it's likely IMO that mum needs a specialist.

Thank you for your kind words and support. Mum continues to scream constantly and is so unhappy. I am staying positive and asking lots of questions, I will sort this for her.
