The attachment is a handout I prepared for a training day for nurses. Much of the information is derived from posts on Talking Point -- all I did was put them together. So thanks, everyone.

Hi Bruce

Yes, I've got version 7, my PC seems to update everything automatically. Annoying sometimes when I need to shut down in a hurry, and it tells me it's installing updates. Still, I shouldn't complain, it's all working brilliantly at the moment.

I've got a Mesh PC, and a Toshiba laptop, networked so that I can work downstairs without leaving John. Have to admit, though, I had to get help with the networking, the Toshiba has Norton pre-installed, and it wasn't letting me link. Cost me £40 to get a professional in, but it was worth it. He said he wouldn't use Norton, it causes all sorts of problems, but it's working OK now.

Cheers,

hazel

Sorry, I'm stupid! I missed Sylvia's post, thought you were asking me. Sylvia, if you want a Word version, PM me your email address.

Bruce, can I edit it? If people are going to use it, I really don't want my name on the bottom. Should have thought of that sooner.

am i not understanding or just being naive, aren't nurses taught this and if not why not ????????????? what is going on ? is it not common sense with this disease as it is becoming more widespread, surely it shouldn't be up to the individual that can be bothered to find out !!!

Hi Hairwench

Sadly, I don't think they are, unless they specialise in mental health. The same (even more sadly) applies to doctors. Luckily the secondary care agencies are more and more taking over this kind of training.

well done

Hazel

I think your report was very well written and lets hope, it will enlighten hospital staff on the needs of dementia patients. My husband needed an ultra scan and the operator abandoned it half way through because he was stressed. So we have not got a result as to why his leg has been swollen for many weeks. they suspect DVT, as he has vascular problems this is most likley. I am taking him out of the so called care home that allowed this to happen.

'We have students in their first placements who don't know which way is up, let alone how to talk to a person. The way their training is structured they arrive on the wards before they have any lectures on care of the elderly.'

Hairwench, this is a quote from a PM I've just received from a nurse. Nuff said????

All the more reason for them to be supplied with a copy of your excellent report then, Hazel!

Putting on my proactive hat, perhaps we should arrange to send a suitably worded letter to accompany this handout and mail all the Principals and heads of department of teaching hospitals and nursing colleges in the country.

Reactions please?

yes or no

Hi Hazel

This is brill! Thank you for putting it together.

Bruce, I'm all for it being sent to heads of depts at teaching hospitals and nursing colleges. The more information people have about dementia, the better. Ignorance IS NOT bliss!!

the answer has to be yes,but how do we do it?
I had it in mind to supply a copy to all areas where teaching took place to include GP teacing practices.
In fact everywhere that I can think of.
However if there is a way to do a central distribution I would go with that.
Would AS do it?

Hi Norman

well it is easy to get the address details, to mailmerge the letters, etc.

the cost of postage is an issue these days.

I'm not sure that AS has the focus to do it. It is a very specific area, and specific areas - such as early onset - are not well catered for already.

Might be best for the TP community to do it... might even get more publicity that way. I would not expect a good reply response and that might even get us better publicity!

I'll check out the address list to see how much the postage might cost. I've done loads of such mailings in the past. Rocket science it ain't.

... just my thoughts

Thanks Skye, just got around to reading - brilliant.

Brucie, you mentioned postage, would be more than willing to meet the cost of this. So worthwhile..

Hi Hazel, I have just read your attachment and found it excellent. My mum has advanced vascular dementia and has been admitted to hospital a number of times in the past year. As a family we found that we had to provide 24/7 care for her in hospital because the staff did not have the time to give her the attention she needs. Your article is very sensitively written, neither hospital staff nor the patient should feel patronised by it. I live in Northern Ireland so making sure it reaches the correct outlets wouldn't be as big a problem as in the rest of the UK. Would it help to give a copy the care administrator of each trust. This person co-ordinates the care of each client between the hospitals, district nurses, care agencies and family, in fact, anyone connected with the care of each client. He or she could then include it in each person's file. As for including it in nursing colleges, I would gladly help on this side of the water. Just let me know. Caring for our loved ones is not a dress rehearsal, there is no one waiting in the wings to take their place.
Thanks.
