My dad (93) is deteriorating rapidly over the last 2 weeks, we found him still dressed in the same clothes, jacket, shoes from the night before so he obviously hadn't been to bed. We are not sure whether he is looking after his personal hygiene and now feel that extra care/help is needed. The costs seem to high for a carer - he owns his own home so will he have to pay for everything himself?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I’m sorry to read about your dad’s deterioration.

I wondered if this fact sheet would be helpful.

Welcome to the forums @jwhistler. It does look like you need some support, but the carer never has to pay for it. It's only the person who has care whose financial position is taken into account. I'm not sure where your dad stands on his home being taken into account, others will have better experience. The factsheets and links at https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-support/legal-financial will take you through some of the process and explain care needs assessment as carers assessments.
Good luck and keep posting as we have a knowledgeable membership always happy to support one another.
